Is the chrome flaking or is that some kind of clearcoat?

It's some kind of clear coat I think Phil. I thought it was a gloss powder coat but not sure.

Probably on the aluminium main cam cover too. The bit with 'Motor Company' is the removable timing cover isn't it?

I can remember when I owned a 2003 twin cam fat boy I attended a weekend bash at Settle I think it was Feb and it was colder than a penguins todger and it snowed all the way home, anyway the bike was parked up in my garage and I left it there for 2 weeks and when I lifted the door the black fat Boy was now a cracking weird colour that was mainly green and lacking in chrome on many parts and since then I have always come to the conclusion that they are chromed with Florida chrome, good for their climate but over here in blighty not a chance
