Evaporative Emissions

Did you know - and not a lot of people know this, but my 05 883L has been fitted with an Evaporative (EVAP) Emissions Control System. The EVAP system prevents fuel hydrocarbon vapours from escaping into the atmosphere.
Hydrocarbon vapours in the fuel tank are directed through the vapour valve and stored in the charcoal cannister (which is behind the engine underneath the swinging arm). If the vehicle is tipped at an abnormal angle, the vapour valve closes to prevent liquid gasoline from leaking out of the fuel tank into the charcoal cannister through the vapour valve hoses.
When the engine is not running, the gravity operated trap door in the cleaners snorkel is closed to seal the inlet port of the air cleaner backplate.
When the engine is running, carbureter venturi negative pressure slowly draws off the hydrocarbon vapours from the charcoal cannister through the canister-to-carburetor purge hose. These vapours are then burned as part of normal combustion in the engine.

Clever innit??

See - bints on bikes know a bit or two about bikes

Re: Evaporative Emissions

Sounds as though certain people on here could do with one of those systems Bexx, dunnit .

I can't keep fuel in the tank long enough for it to evaporate anyway my injection system doesn't have that problem

Ere, ave you two gels got a mutual admiration thingy going on ;) or shouldn't I ask

Re: Evaporative Emissions

I am sorry to say that it is not all good news, sounds as if you have a California import model.

If so your VIN number will start with a 1 not a 5 as International models.

This means various components are different to International and US domestic bikes.

EG Air filter & Carb set up an a few other minor bits, fortunately the cams are the same.

Junk it, you don't need it and the bike will run better without all the emission controls.

Re: Evaporative Emissions

I suspect Bexx is fine (and so is her bike )and that she's just been entertaining us with the contents of her manual, ooo err....

As far as I'm aware, however, you are quite correct and these canisters are not fitted on international bikes, just the Californian ones.

Cheers

Mike
