| Re: Treorchy - info please Magick Sorry for the PM but for some reason I can't post anything to the board. Anyway, I live about 8 miles from Treorchy and I'll tell you what I know. OK, forget that. I am now able to post thanks to Rogers swift response. Anyway this is what I reckon. Its in a very much "Valleys" part of South Wales. An old pit community it has suffered from high unemployment and is one of the poorest areas of Wales. The people are great, there is a community spirit and some of the Pubs are really good. There is a huge drug problem and the crime rate is high. Its close to the mountains and therefore some of the best riding roads in South Wales. Valleys folk are not like others in my area and as long as you make an effort you will be welcomed. There is one bike shop, and its crap. Two very good indys within 20 miles or so though. Nearest main shopping town is Pontypridd (My home town) www.pontyonline.co.uk and of course Cardiff is the main hub now. There is a small amount of shops in the main street although these are mostly Spar's, charity shops, hairdressers and stuff. There are a few supermarkets within a couple of miles. The is a small cinema and theatre, a male voice choir and some good pubs (did I say that ??). Houses are cheap, old pit houses, very sturdy and full of character. There are some large houses for low prices. There are plenty of hills, none of it is on the flat, so gardens can be steep! If you need any detailed information, let me know and I'll dig it out, or maybe I could send you a few local papers? Anyway, South Wales is a nice place, that's why I eventually returned "home" Regards Fubar

| Re: Treorchy - info please Thank you Baza and Spice for their cultural comments Its not true about the 3 eyes, although there is some evidence of webbed feet! As for the sheep, come on lads this is the 21st century. Sheep Lib has taken a hold and some of them damn sheep are starting to get quite choosy Fubar

| Re: Treorchy - info please Hi Fubar Thank you for your reply - that was very informative and has given me things to think of - the house I was looking at is for sale by auction - I am waiting to find out more details from the agent. It was just a spur of the moment thing - I was looking at the net and found this house for what seems a total bargain price - but as we all know you dont get anything for nothing I am always looking for ways out of the 'rat race' so will keep trying ![]()

| Re: Treorchy - info please Hiya That is very kind - thank you I have talked it over with my other half and we are not in a position to be able to look seriously at moving at the moment - he has financial and legal things to sort out before we can make a decision. But who knows maybe we will move to Wales and can buy you a drink ![]()

| Re: Treorchy - info please Hey there, I used to live in Treorchy, it is considered to be one of the more expensive areas of the top end of the Rhondda Valley. (Average house price 80-100k). There are some good pubs and Wayne Bowen (the bike shop) isn't really crap, it's just a Honda main dealer and they frown on Harley Davidsons (usual propaganda... unreliable, electrics don't work, don't go round corners etc etc) Anyway, Treorchy is a nice area, if you phone Remax estate agents and ask to speak to Rob Moore he'll point you in the right direction as to what you should pay etc etc. As far as the drug problem is concerned, don't believe everything you read. The problems faced by the Rhondda Valley are just the same as those faced in City Centres. Unless you want to associate in those circles, you won't have any problem. It isn't the drug takers you want to worry about when you go out, it's the drunk people, and that, as you probably know, is the same anywhere. I moved from there due to work commitments and do not have any plans to move back to the Rhondda, but that's not because I don't like the area, it's because (apart from my job situation) I spent more than 30 years there and I am now relishing the change. The people are friendly, the community spirit is good, the surrounding countryside is beautiful and the culture and heritage stand firm and are visually evident. The houses are full of character. It is mainly 1900s terracing, but they will still be standing long after the Baratt legoland has fallen! Admittedly, unemployment is high and most of the good jobs are now centred around the Cardiff area. Treorchy - Cardiff is not a bad commute though, plenty of people do it (25 miles and takes about 50 mins-1hr in peak traffic). As for crime, I lived in the area for 30 years and had my car broken into twice. Many people have worse stories, but that's mine and I think it's an awesome record. Out of all the places in the upper valley, Treorchy is up there with the best of them. Historically, house prices hold their value and the village is very pleasant and well stocked. Go up and check it out, I reckon you'll like it. ![]() Last edited by Micey; 01-06-2006 at 01:40 PM. |
