Apes on a Road King

Has anyone got 12" apehangers on their Road King. I am thinking about fitting some and I can't imagine what they will look like until I fit them. With the extra expense of extended cables ect. I would like to see a pic first. Anyone help?

Brian.

personal opinion (while clinging on to my 18in bars): apes AND a screen are a daft looking combination

Thanks Dave for that...they look good to me and that's the way I'm gonna go now. I don't ride with a screen anymore, I like the wind blast and bugs in the teeth.

similar thoughts here also
have you thought about 1 1/4" chubbies?
my opinion for what its worth (having fitted them to my own RK )
they do look cool, especially as they reduce to 1" thru the clamp all hidden by the clamp cover, they give a little more width and are heavy enough to cut out the vibes coming thru the bar's which can be painful during a long journey and that being what roadkings are built for not popping down the local shop.
also they seem to cut out that burning sensation between my shoulder blade's.
and being frank apes are just plainly wrong on a cruiser
plus with chubbies there;s plenty of room to conceal all the oem wiring held in place by those nasty cheap plstic clips

Re: Apes on a Road King

Brian,

Over here in southern Cal it appears that all the fL type bikes (softtail and road queen) end up with apes of some description although most are higher than 12", all run are screenless. to be quite honest the look doesn't really appeal to me but then its all down to personal taste , I think if you want to go for apes then you realy need a skinnny front end (19" or ideally 21" but then of course its up to you)

When I fitted 18" apes to the Mrs' wide glide I had to extend the handelbar looms and I also took the oppotunity of leading them inside the bars to tidy the whole thing up. I also had to get a longer clutch cable and a new set of throttle cables.

Re: Apes on a Road King

SAFETY.
When fitting high bars to a Road King, the two individual top clamps are way too inadequate to provide proper clamp to the bars. Under hard braking or (god forbid) a light collision the riders weight leverage can allow the bars to easily fold forward.
Without exeption at our shop when installing high bars we also install a stock one piece top clamp (with knurling).
It is also a good idea (as it is hidden) to drill & tap a small hole through the top clamp & bar, then install a small bolt or pin to lock the bar in place.
Don`t forget to make sure the bar is where you want it before doing this!
Also make it only a small hole so as to not weaken the bars, they have a large hole underneath for the internal wiring.

Re: Apes on a Road King

Thanks for all the advice. Thanks phild...it never occoured to me about my weight moving the bars under heavy braking or impact. I'll certainly be pegging the new ones.
Thanks Brian.

Re: Apes on a Road King

That's too high for a good looking bike like a RK...b@stard to ride as well I would think.
