Customise a mustang tank

I thought some might be interested in seeing how I turned my Mustang tank into a dished tank.

I welded some round bar to the tank and then caved it in with a rubber mallet that i shaped like a egg.
Relocated the petrol hole, the tap you see I haven't been able to stop it leaking.(work in progress)

A good tip if your planning on welding a tank, once you empty it get a heat gun or the old girls hair dryer and blow it through untill the petrol smell goes.

I can't get any more photo's downloaded, I'm going to have to downsize them I think.
Beer with me.

To get the look I wanted I changed the positioning of the tank mounts to flush mount on the top of the frame.

I then filled the space with P38.
Then spent quite a bit of time sanding.
Once is was as flat as a baby's bum I then spot filled then primed it to see where any small holes were.
I then spot filled them with a automotive spot filler.
Then sanded it really smooth ready for paint.
I've done progress photo's of the paint job and gold leafing, I can post those if anyone's interested.

Tibbs

ps.whats the best size to download photo's on the site?

Nice looking tank, always loved the mustang, its got great lines, be carefull when you mount it if youre having it frisco style (sitting on top of the rail) from experience you need some decent mounts otherwise it can break loose quite easily when its full up, i found the best way was to weld a piece of stud into the frame then bolt onto it instead of the other way around.

Try using photbucket for your photo's its free and it means yopu can throw all your photo's up there and not be restricted on size

Apparently there is another way of doing this that i would like to try when i invest in a plasma cutter, you cut out both sides then swap them (inside out obviously) as long as you cut them exactly the same size its easy apparently!

Re: Customise a mustang tank

Thanks for the advice fellas.
Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to buy a plasma cutter!
I didn't weld the round bar on, my old man did that.
My first attempt at welding was the mounting brackets, I was quite proud of it but now I'm shitting bricks with your advice re brakeing.
