I've been testing it since it's business release for one of my daytime jobs. I haven't found any problems with it that would affect day to day usage although check whether your 3rd party Anit Virus software works with XP as this did cause problems (McAfee Enterprise 8.0i)

I would advise that you install from scratch rather than upgrade from XP; it might sound like extra work but you will end up with a cleaner build. If you have access to Norton Ghost take an image of your drives before installing Vista. That way you will be able to go back to a working platform should it all turn the wrong colour.

Most annoying thing seems to be that Vista asks for more confirmation to tasks than any other Windows O/S (as if they didn't ask enough! Are you sure? Really sure? Phone a friend?). There's probably a registry key that can be tweaked to change this but I haven't looked yet.

On the plus side it feels slicker once you can find where everything now lives - Add and Remove Programs is now called Programs and Features for example. On the whole I prefer it to XP.

It is more memory hungry and as always don't bother installing it if you only have the minimum recommended memory in your machine.

If you are going to change your O/S install Linux instead.

Re: Windows Vista

I've been running Vista (optimate) now for the past 5/6 months, in RC1 & RC2.
What G.G. said about memory is true I'm running a 3 GHz processor with 1 1/2 gb of memory (the original 1Gb wouldn't cut it). To run vista with its full aero graphics you'll also need a very up to date graphics card.
Within the past 5/6 months I've had zero blue screen crashes,- even with a pre release edition. Most programs that were compatible with XP are also fine with Vista, but there are exceptions,- I can't get my scanner to work, or an external sound processor along with a few other little things,- and there seems to be no solutions in site.(so like when XP came some hardware had to be replaced).
Vista is much safer than XP ever was, it has been made much harder to unsuspectingly download viruses, or malicious scripts. Along with I.E.& with its anti phishing filters, and Windows Live Mail, & windows defender- the whole package seems fairly secure,- but only time will tell.
Vista, is a big step forward from XP, and I will upgrade, (even though I'll also have to upgrade my computer hardware).- If your running a computer more than a year old forget it and just wait until you buy a new one.

Re: Windows Vista

Just built myself a new PC and thought I would give Vista a try despite all the negative comments i have heard about it.Must admit , I used all new components so no issues with drivers(except for my old scanner, which has been sort of sorted using Vuescan). After about 10 days use, I must say its all running pretty sweetly.Did have an issue the first day due to an out of date graphics driver but that was soon sorted. All of the programs I have work fine.No crashes. It does take a bit of getting used to after XP, but once you find your way about its pretty good.
What it is like on an old PC I don't know, but if your components are up to the job, don't be afraid to give it a go.
