Slight problem when fitting new seat to Iron

Well not much of a problem but...being huge, and with my 13-year-old daughter pestering me to take her out on the new Sportster Iron, I decided to buy a dual seat which possesed some extra padding for my hugh jarse.

Found a brand-new Harley Sundowner on eBay (did check everywhere that it was the right 'un) for quite a bit less than new silly price. It arrived today and I went to fit it. Original joke single seat - off, no probs. Instructions for new Sundowner say "remove retention washer and remove retaining bolt that lives under the fender and which allows rear tab to be held in place and resite it towards the back of the fender to meet up with the tab at the back of the new, longer seat.

So...got the washer and bolt off easily...BUT when I went to removed the chrome-headed screw in the most rearward position, the hole thus revealed was the wrong shape for fitting the retention washer and bolt into. In fact it's just a round 'ole without the extra semi-circle for holding the retaining bolt in place.

The reason for this is related to the UK version of the Iron having a fender-end licence plate fitted, rather than a side-mount licence plate - so there's a plate that runs under the rear of the fender with a simple threaded hole in it.

I suppose I could have just used the chrome-headed screw to fasten the tab on the seat end to the fender but this would surely damage the paint under the tag after some use - so I grabbed a thin, synthetic rubber tap washer and shoved that under it the seat tab. Not an ideal solution as the retention washer and the shaped bolt is not in place but with a bit of Loctite it'll probably be OK.

Sorry this is so long - but has anyone else experienced this? How did you get round it? I have some ideas!

Cheers,
BigAl :169B9ADF431545348BC

XL1200C Rear Wheel Work/Queries

Hi all,
Hope you're all still out riding and haven't packed them away just yet?! :sign0098:

My XL1200C has a chompered solid rear wheel - chrome flaking and peeling off etc. (It was the previous owner, not me guv'nor!!) It's in pretty bad nick.

What do people think - re-chrome or powdercoat? She's a black bike so I'm edging towards black powdercoat - there's enough shinyness already!

Anyway.......question time!

1. Can I even powdercoat a chrome wheel??!!

2. What sort of bike lift do people have, co's I'm gunna get me one? I'm edging towards the Clarke CML2.

3. Removing the rear wheel involves removing the rear pipe (so I can get the axle out, see?!). Do I need the 'special tool' to remove the O2 sensor?

4. Have we had a definitive answer yet on putting the rear axle back in from the left (as sitting on the bike) for future ease of removal - I understand the contention is that the nut is more likely to come loose of its own accord if this is done as its running counter to the direction of travel?

I'm sure I'll think of more, but any help for now with the above gratefully received.

Cheers all! :A:

1998 - 1200 Sportster.

This morning going in to work, I heard a noise as though I was riding through gravel, ferk it was loud. Didn't think anything of it, until I went to park the bike up. Sounded as if something was rattling around the gearbox area.

Snicked it into 2nd gear & tried to pull away successfully, same with first. Switched the bike off and then restarted, put it into first gear, with no clunk and pulled away, no probs.

Have been a bit worried that the box is going to grenade on me out on the road. This afternoon, on leaving work, started up okay. Put it into 1st and waited on any noise form that area, the clunk was there ("they all do that sir") but not as it usually is. Got home in 1 piece, no worries.

The question is, is this something that I should be worried about and get checked out?

Normal Clutch Behaviour

I have a 2009 883 Sportster with stage 1, it has done a 1000 miles and just had its first service. As the weather is a lot colder now I notice particularly when it is cold if I am going in and out of the clutch in thick traffic I get a little clonking noise and feel when engaging and disengaging the clutch. Other than this the bike is spot on, as this is the first winter it has been out wondered whether this was normal when particularly cold?

Neutral is easy to find and the gearchanges are all fine (eg usual HD Sportster clacky)

Hi I'm getting back into bikes after a 22 year gap , my last bike was an RD 350 ypvs , my wife is going to buy a harley for my 40th which is next year, so I'm doing a bit of research ready for it ! Do the price of bikes really go up in the summer ? I fancy a 1200 sportster, i took one out last week from bridge in exeter and loved it but it was £6200 so a little out of my price range, I'm looking at older models but is there a real difference with the pre 2004 bikes without the rubber engine mounts , many thanks sorry about all waffle

My 883 chop runs out of tax saturday so its comin off the road for a full rebuild. I didn't build it. I know the battery is not chargin when runnin but I'll sort this later. So I've been startin the bike off a car battery just to get it runnin, stop engine, and then put the bike battery on knowin it will fire up and not drain it to much. Every 4 or 5 days I charge the bike battery on trickle. I've been doin this for months. Now then, wednesday I connect the car battery, eventually it starts (its allways struggled) cuts out and I notice thick smoke comin from the regulator. I switch off and remove key. Shit, now its on fire, glowin red, and I'm startin to panic as its chained to my trike. Disconnect live to battery and it stops. Touch live to battery and it starts to glow again. Now why did it fry the regulator when switched off ? Bear in mind whoever wired it may not have done so correctly but its been ok till now. Cheers.

Evenin all
this has prob been asked a million and 1 times so apologies but a mate of mine is thinkin of gettin a sportster (after much persuasion from yours truly) instead of one of those honkwakyamzuki`s,but he`s heard its cheaper to buy a 883 and have a conversion to 1200 rather than buy a 1200 straight off so i`d like to hear the thoughts and experiences from your good selves on this matter to help steer him in the right direction,
cheers
