45 Gas valve alignment tool

I'm new to the forums and a friend of Kiz who pointed me here. I've recently bought a 1943 WLC that was kitted out as a bobber. I'm putting it back to a standard bike and one of the things I need to do is check the alignment of the gas valve holes before I line and paint the tank.
Kiz suggested I ask here if anyone has the correct tool for this that they would be willing to let me borrow as buying a new one for a one off job seems a bit extravagant. I will of course, pay all postage and give a donation to the owners project fund or a charity of their choice.
Thanks in advance, Joe.

Ironhead Sportster drum brake/rear axle

Hi I'm building an ironhead chop (with alot of help from my mates), it started life as a 75 ironhead and at some point somebody put it in a very ugly plunger frame. I got an original 70's weld on hardtail from the states and have now chopped the frame and welded on the hardtail. At the weekend when we were looking at the drum brake we realised that the brake plate was non standard and someone had fabricated it from brass plates and over the years it has worn and run out of true. The brake drum is original but now has got us wondering what the set up should be as we aren't sure what else has been fabricated to suit the plunger frame. Can anybody tell me what the axle diameter should be as looking at some other website some people say it should be 5/8" and some say 7/8". Also if anybody has any more tech info on a rear brake brake wheel for ironheads (explode diagrams, part no. etc) it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ironhead big bore

Hello All, You may have caught my previous posts about building a road race Sportster outfit, the project is going reasonably well despite spearing my Triumph outfit into the Cadwell tyre wall bending both the bike and myself. The capacity limit for my class is 1300cc and luckily for me a fellow member of the vintage club has been making encouraging noises about casting some big bore barrels for me. Obtaining pistons might be more difficult, what I would like to know is will 1200cc evo Sportster pistons fit. I am aware that the evo con rod is a half inch shorter but have HD kept the pin to crown distance the same and shortened the barrels at the bottom - dropping the barrels closer to the crank or taken the half inch from the top of the barrel meaning a piston redesign. Your thoughts please.

                      Regards, David

Wide Glide back in black.....

**Greetings from Down Under!**

**Hell of a good time to have the 1980 FXWG painted, pimped, pampered and back on the road, seeing as it has been the hottest spring in Melbourne for, oh, 100 years Image: http://www.hdforums.com.au/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/tongue.gif . Been 29-35degrees all week here.....anyways....to backtrack...**

**Got here 18 months ago. Needed a bike, bought this in July last year looking like this:**
**Image: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/kiwidave/1980FXWG/fxwg2.jpg **
**Image: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/kiwidave/1980FXWG/fxwg1.jpg **
**As you can see, when I bought it, it had high apes, solid rear wheel off some Softail, wrong front end (FL style wide glide trees that in themselves were mismatched) and with Evo-era FLHT fork tubes), and a paint job I thought was OK at best. So it looked OK on the surface....**

**On closer inspection there was a lot of mismatched and worn out shit i.e. S&S carb bracket was to fit a late Evo….wrong starter motor for year….horrible chrome oil bag, shrouded rear shocks that I didn’t like either….. some dodgy wiring, rear brake reservoir located high up just below the steering neck (!!), mismatched and crappy switchgear, chrome rear with tired and tatty button sides,. rear brake poorly mounted with no freeplay so it seized a lot….comp sprocket assembly and primary chain were at the limit of their wear….the Big Fix 52 roller bearing kit which made the clutch work OK but fell out all over the garage floor with every disassembly (catching them on the roadside? No thanks) . **

**Also, I was a bit over apes by the time I got it, having ridden with 18in ones for about ten years in the UK…and whitewall tyres are just a pain in the ass on a old non-bagger ….they look shoddy when you get the inevitable oil on them. etc etc**

**What I did like about it was , uh, the fairly original lines and frame, sealed H-D battery, generator Shovel style dash console, fairly clean motor, easy kickstart action, stainless brake line….er…..that’s about it! Oh yeah, and the main attraction was that it was a great price for a registered bike…. $11,500 or about 5000 quid off eBay with known state roads history. (Harleys and parts are VERY DEAR here, most reasonable used Shovels are 7000 quid, any this price are usually fresh imports with no history and no registration, which is expensive first-time).**

**I smiled when I got home and found that the ‘’new top quality Accel ignition system’’ mentioned in the eBay listing was in fact just fresh points…..and probably not that fresh, given that a couple of months later the lobe on the points arm had worn down enough to screw up the ignition and leave me at the roadside, fitting new ones for the first time in my life.**

**But I rode it otherwise trouble-free for some 3000 miles while I thought about how it should look…..with just a few upgrades until the second week of January, when the most godawful crunching and clattering inside the camchest occurred. **

**And that was the worst news….some previous owner had fitted a non-stock cam but kept the shit quality cam bearing that H-D used here and there through the Shovel and Evo era......AARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!**

12V Lectrics on WLA

Seems an obvious question but I've scoured the posts from top to bottom without finding the answer.

Can I upgrade a WLA to 12V lectrics. Preferably alternator based. W&W offer a product which they describe as a "bolt on 12V alternator for all generator models thru 1969". Comes with an integral solid state regulator/rectifier.

If this fitted a WLA and actually worked, this would be blummin brill. 12v battery and coil would not be a problem sourcing. Lights etc not an issue as this is a custom bike.

Please no death threats from the purists. We got the bike like that, we didn't chop it!

It tells you which square pegs fit into what round holes, or how to make them do so with minimum pain. This book will enable you to build a motorcycle from a stack of more-or-less unrelated parts. It will also assist you in building your motorcycle for the greatest amount of power, the most reliability, or somewhere in between. This book can save you a tremendous amount of time, complications, and money.
Sftbd., 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 in., 80 pp., 50 illus

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking for info mainly on _Ironheads_,just a wondering if this book is any good.

What i really want is something that gives specs for_ all_ Ironheads ref -engine and Gearbox details ie- cams - valves -pistons - comp ratio's.

I've sent off for the two CDs that were mentioned in another post.(just realised that the postage is for Yankee land only so i'm not sure my $1-95 postage will see them flying here in a hurry :D )

Cheers

Hi all,

I bought a Harley carb, guy said he took it off his 89 FXR. I have an 81 Ironhead.

I have read the past threads on here about re-jetting, also looked at the Sportster Home Page. I had a look at the jets, is the main jet the one that screws into the tube the needle slides into and where is the slow jet? The jet (main jet?) that sits between the float has 175 stamped on it.

My manules only go upto 85, does anyone have a pic of a CV carb for an 89 Harley.

Thanking you all in advance.

Andy.

WLA almost finished now but having probs with the wiring of the headlight and horn, not sure if it is something to do with the fact that I am not putting the blackout light back, I seem to have 3 spare wires that were originally fitted to the bakerlite terminal block, but I have replaced original headlight/horn mounting bracket with a civvy one !

Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! I have tried doing it from the wiring diagrams in th TM manual but no luck !!!
