Hi, The speedo cable on my '92 Electra glide has given up the ghost. I know the cable is easy to replace as I done one on my '90 Superglide but my problem is I can't work out how to get to behind the clocks.

Do I need to remove the whole fairing & if so does anyone know how or can I pull the clocks from the front of the facia? Looking at removing the fairing seems a daunting task:frown:

Thanks

Oil in air filter

Hi. I've just bought myself a Harley '92 Electra glide.

When checking it over I found the air filter was soaked with engine oil (It's not the K&N re-use type but the paper one). It was obvious that it hadn't been changed for along time (bits of leaves, insects etc in there)

The crankcase breather runs into the airfilter back plate.

Oil pressure is normal according to the guage, plugs aren't oiled up, exhaust does'nt smoke, compression test taken when engine warm reads 90psi on both cylinders

Should I be worried about this oil in the air cleaner & I think compression readings seem low? Image: http://www.bikechatforums.com/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

I am fitting some new bars and switches, what i want to know is, whats the maximum current that the normal wires take, not the starting circuit just the lights, indicators and ignition.
I have been looking at 16.5 amps as i can get all the right colours, if i go to 25amps i cant get all the correct colours.

Hi,

I'd appreciate some help. I have a '93 springer that has a Battistini rear fender and taillight system. I'm replacing it all with new OE bobtail, licence plate mounting bracket and rear light cluster.

The rear light has 2 metal bars at the back that pass thru 2 oval holes in the licence plate mounting frame and the bottom of the light cluster pushes into a turned over lip on the mounting frame bracket.

Is that all there is to it? I'm not sure but I think there should be some additional rubber grommets/fasteners for the rear light bars to hold them in place or as anti-vibration. It's not clear from the HD schematics. My quess would be rubber grommets in the oval holes in the licence plate. Tried the local HD dealer to no avail......any assistance would be appreciated especially part numbers or alternate part sources as harley prices tend to be horrendous for these type of things.

Many thanks in advance.
kind regards
John

Heritage Softail Handling

Hiya all,

I have a number of handling issues with my 94 softail heritage classic which I'd love some advice on. It is pretty stock mechanically as far as I can tell. I'm running Avon venom whitewalls front and back 16 / 140 /90 with 36lbs in the front and 42 in the rear and i think standard rear shocks cracked up to full preload if I'm reading the setting right. The back end does not bounce if I bounce up and downon it, so the damping is doing something.

1. Without the screen when I get to about 70mph or more the front gets very twitchy. The tiniest movement on the bars causes the bike to weave. It's a bit disconcerting. With the quick release screen on it becomes more stable but less responsive... sometimes I lean and the bike don't turn as much as it should so I have to be a bit more deliberate. This probably varies depending on wind direction but I could not say for sure. It feels like it needs a steering damper sometimes.

2. In the wet today the back wanted to slide with even the tiniest bit of throttle on a bend. It felt pretty unsafe on roundabouts and bends really needed nursing round a bit like the rear tyre was oily at times and even the front to an extent. Again, not confidence inspiring.

I think the above two could be related to poor tyres, the front looks almost new, though the centre tread of the rear is on it's last legs and down to a couple of mm, the edges seem to have lots of tread so closer inspection might reveal it to be squared off. I'd like an old skool fat firestone tyre on the back if I could find one but handling is my primary concern.

3. Finally, when cornering generally, if the road has any lumps in it, the bike will wallow, rocking back and forth on the suspension, a bit like the damping needs turning up. Combine this with the twitchy front end and it wants to weave in the bend too.

Someone once described a bike as handling like it was hinged in the middle. Sometimes mine feels like it's going that way.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Cheers, Jamie.

Hi all.

I'm trying to find some information for one of the guys down here that is building something a bit special. :60277EB7B04744289C0

He's doing a Hardtail, with a rubber mounted big twin. He is looking for a belt drive set up to suit, with the torque plate to keep every thing stiff.....oh er misses.....:D

I'm sure that I have read that someone makes a kit for the rubber mount set up, in one of the magazines, (ie Hotbike) or on a shop web site somewhere or even possibly Knitting Monthly :D

Can anyone point me in the right direction please........ many thanks.

Bought my first Harley 1998 FLSTC the work on the scoot is amazing the guy spent fortunes on it. Now to the point it had only done 11,000 miles 5,000 in the last 5 years so got my spanner man to do a major service and go through the bike asked him about another cam when he brought it back.He said I should check with the previouse owner as the ignition was upgraided to a crane fireball hi-4e ajustable rev ignition system . The last owner never done it and I cant get the 1st owner . My question why would anyone upgraid to this system on a standard engine the reason I'm saying this is the money spent ie custom paint , large touring tank 7thousand pounds spent on chrome and other peices cant beleive he would'nt put anything into the engine ?????
