Maldon, still with strong links to the river, at the head of the Blackwater Estuary, with a small trading port and old Thames sailing barges. When the tide is out, it really is out!.One of the oldest towns in the area, once plundered by the Vikings, they beat the Saxons at the Battle of Maldon 991AD, the site, English Heritage, is at Park Drive, Maldon. It grew as a town based on trading and specialist trades, mainly for the London markets. The development of the railway allowed goods and people to be transported by land rather than sea.Today the High Street is the centre of commerce, with small lanes running off it. The shops and restaurants compliment the market held on Thursdays and Saturdays.Quite a lively community, with frequent events. Parks and leisure centre. Two islands in the estuary, Northey Island which is National Trust, and Osea Island which is a private estate, and, last we heard, is for sale, for £6 million
