I think this may be a bit much for someone who does not know about keyboards.. also it will wipe his XP and if he doesn't like it he will not be able to recover easily as they don't have Optical drives (any use of external drives is going to too complicated too) and I ain't too sure his will have come with a recovery disc either..
You need to change to UK keyboard someone has already explained this
I have a netbook too the main thing is I recommend a bare minimum of 1GB RAM to run XP though I run 2GB
Go to crucial.com select to shop in english and it should will be able to pick by maker model etc..
Buy 2GB to be safe (it is really cheap)
It is easy to fit as there will probably only be one access panel on the bottom of the netbook
Make sure before you do anything to ground yourself (touch something electrical with a metal surface like a fire or a water pipe just push a metal object into the ground) to get rid of static (you don't need to wear one of those little bracelets as long as you have got rid of any static)..
