I run a 21 to make it a bit more comfortable at motorway speeds, that seems about right. I think that you have to remove some metal off the case to run a 23, or the chain does it for you!

As for the timing, static timing should sort enough to get you going and then you can run somewhere for a dynamic check out.

Jeff, Riverside is at Putney, London. maybe a bit far to go for a timing check.
