That was most likely because in the second case yours was the first bike they serviced, whereas you had to wait on the first occasion for them to do someone else's bike before they turned to yours.

A first service is an oil and filter change and a variety of checks to ensure the bike is OK. For peace of mind buy the factory workshop manual and parts list! Essential bedtime reading....
