If a condition of employment was that you supplied your own computer,it's just the same as supplying your own safety footware or hard hat on a site.
If you turn up and say they've been stollen,they'd say go home and come back when you've replaced them.
As far as I can see,the condition of your first computer when it was returned,is of no concern to the company.You've either got a working computer,and a job,or you've got neither.
The $900 is a completely different issue.If you were allowed trips home as part of your pay and conditions,it should be in writing,so "evidently" doesn't come into it.You were within the stated allowance,or you weren't.
To sum up,the computer is a lost cause,the $900 is dependant on the wording of your contract.
