Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

A big thank you to all of you that helped out on the HDRCGB stand - you made me proud. Also thanks to Bmf Liason Officer Alf for letting the Anglia Region once again assist with the stand along with the Lincs Region.
I must also thank Daz (H.I.M) for the great photo's he took of the club stand and our bikes. Last but not least my lovely Irene who had to put up with serving out breakfasts on Sat and Sun with a Barbeque on Saturday night. Bless her she deserves a medal working alonside me

Finally about the Bmf , I totally agree with Baza who visited the HDRCGB stand - what a cock up this event has turned out to be
Once again the majority of "clubs" were pushed to the back of the show in the club village where only their own club members bothered to visit. Why dont they learn and put their members first and intermingle clubs with the trade stands or dont the bread and butter clubs matter to them anymore
Then the Saturday night entertainment - trying to charge those members who had already paid to camp, £10 to watch the crap bands they had put on (including the Damned). They nearly had a riot on their hands and finally let people go in free and will be reinbrsing those people that did pay. Hopeless
But WE did have a great time and nice to meet so many friends and hopefully people who went away with membership forms to become future friends

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

Everything I've read on this thread has only confirmed my memories from a couple of decades ago. I'm REALLY glad I decided to give it a miss, apart from being able to have a drink or three with you guys.

I still have fond memories of listening to the radio 1 roadshow getting pelted with cans, bottles and assorted other detritus in the early eighties, and congratulating myself on not having been for at least a couple of years before that.

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

The last time i went in the late 80s it rained all weekend, the bands were crap, the mud was deep, i had bits nicked off my Bonneville during the night & it broke down on the way home
Im sure some people this time enjoyed themselves but it still seems to be aimed at making money rather than pleasing bikers !

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

apart from one band, the music was shite and as one the revolting few who got free entry on the saturday, I'm glad I didn't pay, as were alot of the traders me and Nemo spoke to when we were out and about.

aside from that, we managed to dish out a fair number of leaflets and membership forms, so hopefully the club might pick up a few new faces, I suspect the website will as we became a technical forum on occasions and plugged the site as an excellent source of information and help.

a number of the visitors were glad to have found as they were fed up with the HOG experience, especially the cost of joining the outfit and then the added cost to join a chapter as well

Nemo and I also went round the clubs village pushing out leaflets and membership forms to the owners of any harleys we spotted.

we also managed to leave polar cycles business cards on the display bikes of HD, Victory, Triumph and best of all good ole OCC

i have managed to wash all the mud off my face now. Tomorrow the jet wash gets an airing to see if I can find the silver bike lurking inside the mud plugger I put on display.

finally a quick thanks for the trough provided by Foby and Irene.

I did the BMF as a trader many years ago - used to have 'Avalon Leather'. We too had a big barny with the organisers for trying to charge us to go in and see the shit bands, however, that time they didnt relent!!
As traders we used to get sick of being treated like second class citizens when we had actually paid a damn site more to get in i.e our stall pitch, never knowing if we would break even let alone make any money, which incidentally we didnt at the BMF. And at the end of the day, without traders, they have no event, we are part of what people go to see. Always good to bare in mind when organising an event, be nice to the traders and they will come back Never did go back to the BMF!

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

My local bike club used to go every year but stopped going about 4 years ago for the reasons listed by so many. We now go to Kelso instead which is smaller but of much better quality. A more pleasant part of the country as well.

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

being old enough to have ridden to the very first BMF at Peterborough, in the days when it was primarily a road navigation event like the RAC National, I think the BMF had its day quite a long while ago.

I last went two years ago, No 1 Son and myself got new racing helmets and various other items at bargain prices.. but I wouldn't bother otherwise and that was my first visit since the VMCC stopped going due to the huge increase in plot charges for their traditional big marquee, plus the change to a 2-day event which meant that members had to take 2 or 3 days off work to set up Friday and strike Monday.

I was mildly disgusted to see the 59 Club selling patches last time I was there. I've carried mine over from jacket to jacket for years, and now I can buy a new clean one just by going to the BMF?

I'd entirely agree that it's a lot of money to walk around a load of traders and an autojumble consisting almost entirely of crashed jap fours... I agree about Kelso as well, that and GEMS have to a great extent, turned into what it used to be. I still love the speedway and the Wall of Death, and the moped racing.. we've meant to have a go at that for YEARS and never done it... but otherwise, not any more

if you want an expensive event with some proper bike content, go to Scarborough.
