Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

Yep thanks to all.
It was a good weekend until we got the bad news and had to leave early sunday.
Next time we go away I intend to padlock/chain and hide the keys off every vehicle left behind. That way they won't get damaged when my son next gets the urge to be stupid.

Well, I had a good day out yesterday. I've only recently started going to BMF, and don't know any different....so what did it used to be like.

Well this is what he did Wrecked 2 pictures from motorcycles photos on webshots

At the time he was wearing an open face helmet and went head first through a bramble hedge.
So you can imagine the state his face is in plus other bruises
But yes he still lives, this state will be re assessed should he ever do this again

Brian.
Julie and I used to marshal at the show, did it for 10+ years.
We used to look forward to it as it was a good laugh and a great party, we did have to work hard though.
Then infighting within the BMF meant the the experienced show team that had done it for years left, the team that took over only spent 2 years in post before they left.
So now the show is organised by an outside agency with it's own agenda.
Needless to say we don't marshal any more.

And yes, this years show was just a shadow of what it used to be.
Would we pay to go, well no. It's just not good value for money any more.

But it is still a good platform with which to advertise ourselves to the general population.

That's how I came to join the club, by seeing the club stand and popping in for a chat.
I also got into Harleys by going for a test ride on a green Road King at the 1998 show.

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

interesting about the show being organised by an outside agency, it explains a lot. It has become very similar to the East of England Show, which degenerated into more-or-less a giant, expensive, up-market car boot sale with the traditional equestrian and livestock events shoved off into one corner, but maintaining its traditional mid-week dates. Attendances slumped and apparently the format is now more like the old show, but the damage is done and a lot of things have been lost for ever.

the only show which maintains its old character is the TruckFest, what goes on there I couldn't say as I give it a wide berth, but it remains popular. The Caravan and Mobile Home Ex thrives as well, but again this doesn't figure largely in my plans.

I've always regretted the loss of the Expo, a huge steam rally, vintage rally, fair and all-round family day out, things have never been the same since that was discontinued.

The BMF is a dead man walking, anyway. Persimmon Homes will have destroyed the Showground within the next few years, local plans to relocate its main programme to Alconbury haven't come to anything, and the long-dead corpse of the Peterborough Stadium is baing dragged around as a distraction again, which is always a bad sign

Re: Bmf Show, Peterborough Showground

I agree with most of the comments made and could think of many ways to improve it (I think the bands were let down by the poor acoustics in the hall as I have seen Hooker before and they were far better). In the rain on Saturday I said I would`t go next year. But the sun shone on Sunday, I stood and watched the bikes in the steel globe, spoke to many prospective new members and had two good nights with some great people I will be back if you all go again next year.
It proved that even a poor event doesn`t stop HDRCGB having a good time.
Thanks to- Alf for all he brought and provide for free- bread, foil, tea coffee etc.
-Foby and Irene for the food, cooking it, cleaning up, but most of all taking everything to cook, clean etc in a van so that those of us who arrived late on Friday could bring less and just get on and enjoy the company.
-The master forger who gave some of us a warm glow and more drinking tokens(best not print your name) Cheers all Nick
