Harley vs MPV

This is clearly a tragic incident and, without knowing the facts I make no judgment on fault but I was amazed to read that the impact rolled the MPV. It brings home the forces involved when vehicles collide.

Crash catapults biker through van windows

Man was said to be going more than 80 mph before his impact caused the car to roll on top of him; he is listed in critical condition.

A high-speed collision Sunday on Fairview Road sent a motorcyclist to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was launched through another vehicle, which then rolled on top of him, Costa Mesa police said.

The motorcycle's driver, a 35-year-old Garden Grove man, was traveling south on Fairview at between 80 to 100 mph, witnesses told police.

Just before 10 a.m., the black Harley Davidson had just crossed the McCormack Lane traffic light when a white Dodge Caravan pulled out of Belfast Avenue, the next street up, turning left, police said.

The man attempted to slow down, striking the driver's side of the Caravan, Sgt. Bob Durham said. He was ejected from his bike and was sent through the middle driver's side window, coming out the other side through the passenger window. The force of the impact then sent the vehicle rolling over on the passenger side and onto the man, police said.

Witnesses nearby rushed to the wreckage and pulled the van off of the motorcyclist before paramedics arrived, police said. The man was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. He experienced major head trauma and may have been paralyzed, police said. He was put into a medically induced coma due to the severity of his injuries, Lt. Dave Andersen said.

He remained at the hospital Sunday night in critical condition, police said.

"And this all could have been prevented," Andersen said.

Tire tread skid marks just past McCormack indicated the man saw the van pulling out but was unable to slow before colliding with the vehicle, police said.

Police and California Highway Patrol closed down the road to southbound traffic until the afternoon. Traffic exiting the 405 Freeway was redirected north toward South Coast Drive.

The driver of the Caravan was not seriously injured. She remained at the scene and answered a number of police questions but did not wish to speak with the press regarding the accident.

Authorities have not released the name of the motorcycle driver.

Re: Harley vs MPV

That was nearly me yesterday when some young bird driving a flower delivery van turned right out of a side street right in front of me

Good job I was on the Buell instead of the softail as I'd never have stopped in time & would have been right through her side window

Guy in the car behind me must have thought my number was up

By the time I'd straightened the bike up & blown my hooter she was well gone down the road totally oblivious to what she'd done

That's the problem, most people who cause accidents are unaware that their bad driving skills cause accidents and death.

I once followed a guy who pulled out in front of me and spoke to him at the next set of traffic lights.
I told him what he'd done his reply was:-
Quote "That's your problem mate, I drive better than you, I ain't never had an accident"

Probably never uses his rearview mirror to see the trail of devastation he's left behind

At which point he would have accidentaly caught his ears on my fingers and somehow fell through his driver window and unfortunately caught his bollox on my steel toe cap
