Question Gig tickets - am I missing something

I was on the NEC website yesterday morning ten minutes before the Foo Fighters tickets went on sale. The ticket purchase page went up at around 08:58 but there were already no seats left in the tiered blocks 3,4,16 or 17 except a couple in row z. I don't understand how these could have been legitimate sales in that space of time. Have I missed a trick?

I can of course buy tickets on Ebay in these blocks for 3 times face value.

Tell me about it! Two of us were trying on Thursday morning for a London Springsteen gig using both phone and Web page and we didn't get a sniff. All seats and GA sold within 18 minutes. But guess what? Any number of seats and GA were available within 20 minutes on Seetickets and eBay.

Obviously the big boys still have access to any number of tickets they wish and the poor punter either misses out or pays over the odds.

Wifie went online yesterday morning and ordered two standing tickets for the Foo Fighters for Glasgow.

So that's Rush in Oct , The Foos in Nov and the Wildhearts in Dec .

Re: Gig tickets - am I missing something

Yes, you are missing something.

If you subscribed to Ticketmaster & some of the other ticket agents, for which you obviously have to pay, the you sometimes get a 24 hour chance to buy tickets before they go on general sale. So popular gigs get sold out even before general release. That usually allows them to slot a second night in at big venues.

Alternatively, if you are a fan club memeber then you can often get first chance to buy tickets.

So when they sell out wembley in 10 minutes, they probably only had to sell a handful of tickets 'cos the rest had been sold beforehand.

I have bought plenty of tickets in this way when I used to subscribe to Ticketmaster

Springsteen tix went on sale 24 hours ahead of general sale to special subscribers, at least I think that's whats what happened.

True, there was a free pre-sale but the result was the same. They only had about 10% of tickets available apparently.

Ticketb*stard had a few returns during the day, but if you really wanted to go to the London show and weren't one of the fortunate ones, paying over the odds was the only way.
