| Another scam! Oxfam GB
Just had an email from someone purporting to be from Oxfam saying I have won a substantial amount of money. It's another scam. "Oxfam GB" email scam We'd like to offer huge thanks to all of our supporters who have kindly taken the time to advise us of fraudulent emails being sent in our name. These emails advise that Oxfam GB is awarding significant cash grants (examples seen include offers of £750,000 and £850,000) and they ask you to provide personal details - including your bank account number. They include subject headings such as:
If you receive an email like this, PLEASE don't reply to it – just delete it straight away. Oxfam has advised the Charity Commission and we are liaising with the police and other authorities in the hope that we can stop these circulating.

Lets have it right. *If anybody falls for these scams they deserve it. Nobody is going to offer to give you £750,000 for no reason. The President of Nigeria DOESNT want to give you £2M so he can use your bank account for a while. If you have never entered the Spanish Lottery they wont send you a letter informing you of the fantastic news that you have won. Some mysterious company is not going to telephone you congratulating you on winning a competition that you never entered. Maybe Im wrong, and maybe I should actually read these emails and letters when they arrive, just in case?? * Unless youre an OAP and too trusting for your own good.

My Missus works with social services as part of the Adult Abuse team. She is not allowed to name names but the stories she tells me about the old folks giving away vast amounts of money absolutely amazes me. Most of this thieving starts off with a letter or a phone call. But I expect a lot of these old folks now have a computor. Some charities give lessons and a home pc to them so they can keep in touch with families who live a lot more than a bus fare away. A lot of our older generation still trust and believe in their fellow man so are very easy to con. One of these scams coming up and being acted on could net 5 to 10 grand, so a whole month of sending out emails is a reasonable return for their time. I still cannot get my head around why it is not possible to put a check on every email address when it is first used and put that address to a real person.
