Re: Old UK Petrol Stations.

Petrol stations are a bit like cinemas. You hardly notice when one closes down and then, all of a sudden, there are none left in the town.

Re: Old UK Petrol Stations.

I remember when it was 5/2d for a gallon of 105 octane, and we had pumps up in the Highlands where the fuel was pumped up into a graduated glass jar, before being decanted into your car...

And all those petrol stations in towns - pumps on the pavements in busy high streets, with everyone smoking... Never heard of one going up though.

Re: Old UK Petrol Stations.

Aston Brook Garage.
A really fabulous picture of Aston Brook Garage situated on the corner of Aston Road North and Powell St. The picture shows a group of motorcyclists from the Moss Gear company around 1925. I bet it's a Sunday morning and they are all off for a ride down to the Cotswolds or similar.

Flights Garage, Victoria Rd, Aston. This picture was taken about 1933. The brand names show that Shell, Mobil oil, Pratt's Motor Oil and CLICO were on sale here. You can see quite clearly the arm that swung out over the pavement to serve motorcycles and cars that were parked on the road with petrol.

Mareham le Fen, Lincolnshire, Great Britain

Old petrol pump and oil cabinet
This old petrol pump and oil cabinet, the remains of a long-closed petrol station, stand in a small loop road off the A155 just on the west side of Mareham le Fen.

Old petrol pumps in Harrietsham village.

TWELFTH MILESTONE PETROL STATION
Standing in front of their petrol pumps is Sam Adair with his wife at the 12th Milestone in Templepatrick.
The sign behind them says: Please ring for Attendant

Derelict: A once vintage garage that has become a local landmark near Llanberis, North Wales
Sold out: John Stokes, 78, beside the former pumps he manned in Stockbridge, Hampshire for 42 years
Gone forever: A picturesque Kiosk at Doverhay, Exmoor, North Devon before it was concreted over in 2002

Flushed out: The former Filling Station at Exford, Exmoor, North Devon, pictured here in 2007, whose future is currently uncertain

Re: Old UK Petrol Stations.

Brilliant, i really enjoyed that, 25yrs ago i used to work in a station who used to serve the petrol, check oil and water, and `do` the tyres for the customers till 10 o`clock at night. The fuel used to rot your clothes, it was always cold with the wind sucking under the canopy but used to be a brilliant laugh with the people who came in. There is only one garage left that I can think of still serving petrol `old school` and that`s on the West Wales coast. Times have certainly changed with the supermarkets characterless anticeptic faceless approach. Cheers
