| Commando Memorial
I went past the Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge in Scotland last week:- ![]() The inscription on the front reads "In Memory of the officers and men of the commandos who died in the Second World War 1939-1945. This Country was their Training Ground". There is a longer inscription on the back which briefly tells the Wartime history of the Commandos who were based at nearby Achnacarry Castle. More than 20,000 commandos of all nationalities were trained at Achnacarry during the Second World War. Behind the Memorial is a small Area of Remembrance. |

I thought that was an astounding memorial to those brave lads, and found it a very moving experience just standing there and thinking about what they must have went thro. I had an older relative who was a Commando, later on in his life when he was around 80,(he never spoke about it before)told me about the training up there,it sure sounded tough place to be.

Visited the memorial earlier this year. The only noise that was obvious was the roar of a jet fighter set against the darkened clouds overhead. The rememberance garden is very poignant particularly with the names of those who fell in recent conflicts. Well worth a visit. |
