Went to Belgium for Bhol wikend with few mates, stayed at the Motorcycle Loft Hotel, its about 10 miles west of Ostende, not bad:

Anyway while we were there, got chatting to a lovely old couple who were touring round, he on his Indian, she on her Harley. Which would you prefer to be touring Belgium on?....

We looked it up at home, it is a Harley Davidson Topper, 125cc two stroke, single speed.



Starts with a pull cord like a lawnmower.



The lady (silver hair in the photo) lives near Heathrow, and has two HD Toppers, she said there is one more she knows of, who coincidentally lives only a few miles from her! We found a reference book with HD topper mentioned and a photo, of her bike, 270CLN, she said most photos of Toppers are this one.


On their way to an Indian rally this day, her HD blew up, the clutch went, but they will fix it.

Things you see in Belgium eh!

Harley's attempt to break into the 60's scooter market was the Topper, it only lasted from 1960 to 1965
you can see why, looks like a tank compared with Vespa's and Lambretta's of the time.
This one was made in 1963

And here I am on one at the H-D museum in Milwaukeee a couple of weeks ago...
