Booting problem

Hi

I have a HP netbook and i have got this message come up when i turn it on

For Atheros PCIE Ethernet controller v1.0.0.5 _{01/22/09}
Check cable connection
PXE – E63 error while initializing the nic
PXE – MOF exiting intel PXE rom

No bootable device – insert boot disc and press any key

I reset to factory settings, same and exit & it boots up fine, turn off and re start the same message comes back up.

Re: Booting problem

Your Laptop is attempting a network boot. Enter the BIOS when you start it (delete key?) and check the hard disk is set as first boot device. Save settings and reboot

Re: Booting problem

Hi Roger

Thanks for the reply, at present boot priority is

1 ide0 ST9160314AS
2 ide1
3 usb fdd
4 networkboot
5 usb hdd
6 usb cdrom

i presume the ide0 is the hardrive?, if so i still get the boot problem.

cheers

Re: Booting problem

Then you probably have a disk or controller error

Boot up, press start > run
Type chkdsk /f and hit enter. You may have to reboot

See if that improves things

Re: Booting problem

Just possible its losing the BIOS settings when you shut down and its defaulting to a network boot. Then you go in the BIOS and it sets it to IDE boot and then when you reboot it works OK.

If it is that its losing the BIOS settings then that's fairly common if the battery that helps keep the settings has died. At least that's the case on a desktop PC, dunno if that'll be the case with a netbook.

Re: Booting problem

If it is the Bios battery on my HP it is accessible on the bottom of the case, no need to delve inside.

Visit the HP site they are one of the few manufactuers that have a really good site. You can get updated stuff for free. Be careful of a firmware upgrade though, while easy to do get it wrong and it's bye bye laptop.

That aside check out the site. Oh HP batteries are as a rule not good, i have had about four notebooks now and while the machine itself is good batteries not so. That is both main power battert and the bios battery as well.

Re: Booting problem

Hi Guys

Thanks for your replies, if the bios battery is knackered, would the time and date still be up to date?, also i tried the chkdsk/fand i get some sort of error { cannot understand it as my netbook is Spanish}
at present i boot up and get the error, re start F2 bios, change nothing, save and exit, boots up fine
.

cheers

Re: Booting problem

The date and time revert back to when the bios chip was first made. Is there a language section in the bios ?. I can't believe that HP make a specific Spanish notebook....... their American !!!.

I have just goggled it and found some links

Pxe e63 error initializing nic Problems & Solutions - FixYa

It seems that it is trying to boot to a network as Roger says. You could do a reset within the bios, that will put it back to how it left HP.

Cheers Hawkeye,
it would seem its got a mind of its own, it now starts up with the same message, i press ctl alt delt and instead of having to go into bios, it boots up fine, so i went into bio and reset and it still starts as i have just described,
cheers

Re: Booting problem

Perhaps you should see if there isa bios upgrade. You would have to make sure its the right one for your laptop (contact the manufacturer with your mae abd serial number).
Tbe macine must be on mains power for this though.
