Re: serious error's

Could be hardware or software with those symptoms. If you are comfortable doing this, pop the case open and check the usual suspects ie connectors to and from the hard drive. Give it a good blow out with your vacuum cleaner to get rid of the dust (you can see what's going on better)

Not trying to scare you but there was a virus doing the rounds a while ago that caused those symptoms, can't remember the name of it though (so many of em) What were you doing with it the last time it worked ok?

As an option, depending how old the machine is, it may be time to get a better spec machine, you can then bung in the disk drive from your current one and you might have a chance of getting your old data from it.

2nd last option, get someone you know who is ok delving around PC's to have a look at it.

Last option, take it to a PC repair shop.

If you know someone who has an up to date anti virus scanner on their PC and would not mind hooking up your hard drive to their system they could do a scan on it and perhaps see about getting your info recovered.

best of luck.

Re: serious error's

Forgot to say, if you go down the road of putting your disk in another PC, do it so it's NOT the drive that get's booted first. ie, have it as the D: drive but NOT the C: drive.

Re: serious error's

Some of those Kazaa clients have dodgy content in them, ie Trojan/remote access software.
It would be a good thing to get it cleaned off your system, i use bearshare and that is intrusive enough so i run stuff like that on a "sacrificial" machine, they do not have to particularly high in specification. I guess your lad is trying to download music and stuff.
Get hold of some free anti virus and firewall software if you are not running some already. If you look through the other posts on this area you should find pointers to various sites.

Hope you get it sorted ok.

Re: serious error's

I would say Kazza has let the gremlins in. While that is not good, it is not the end of the world.

You could uninstall kazza then go to programs/accessories/system tools and do a restore to the earliest point you can. If this works some programs you installed after you bought it may not work, just reinstall them.

Do not touch Kazza with a barge pole !!!!!.

PM sent as well

Re: serious error's

Arrgh! Not Kazza....it played havoc with my PC as well. I eventually managed to uninstall it and get rid of all the cr@p it left all over my hard disk using AdAware, TrackZapper and WinOptimiser.

Does anything at all happen with your restore disc? Do you need to "boot" the machine from it? - you may need to alter your BIOS settings in order to be able to do that. What make of PC is it, maybe you could get a replacement CD.

Failing that, if you have the XP license number, you *may* be able to install from a borrowed OEM disc using your license - if you can find someone with an installation disc for the same version of XP. It works with previous versions of Windows.

If you're just having trouble getting your restore disc to run, PM me if you need a hand.

Good luck.
