Re: new harddrive

You have backed up your documents and settings (not sure what you mean by that), also backup you favorites and emails it you want to keep them.

Installing XP is easy (honest).

You should only use your XP disc on one PC as the license does not allow you to use it on two, ok ;).

But if you wanted to try your disc ;) on the new hard drive just stick it in the cd drive and reboot the PC. You should see a message 'press any ket to boot from cd', do that tap any key.
Just sit there and wait for it to ask a question, i can't remember the exact sequence of thing but you will be asked how you want it formatted, choose NTFS quick. Accept all defaults and enter CD key when asked.
The installation will ask a few basic question like you name and such. At the bit about networks just click next.

After all this it will reboot itself, leave the cd in till it has started then take it out.

You will be asked a few more question here like do you want XP auto updates on, I say no as i find the system slows down as these are added to over time. They are big downloads and run in the background, your machine appears to be slow while these are coming in.

At the end you will be left at the deasktop. Not you can configuring it the way you want, colour schemes and the like. Copy all you documents back into My Documents folder plus any other backups you have made.

You will now be ready to reinstall Office or any other software that you have.

A useful tip, click START\RUN then type REGEDIT. At the top is the word file, click this, then click EXPORT, save the file and 1st, clean what ever. This will back up your registry. Do this just after you have made the clean XP install then after you have installed all your software.

You will now have two points to go back to should something go awry. I think this is a better way of doing it than the way XP tell you to. I have tried their way and it does not work that well, but the way i have said does work everytime.

Well thats as basic as i can get, there will be bits i have missed but that will get you through. Just remember the only way to break a PC is to throw it on the floor lol.

Just a little thought, it the PC does not start on the CD rom you will have to go into the BIOS to alter the boot sequence of devices. You usually get there by tapping the DEL ket during BOOT

PM sent as well

Hope this helps

Re: new harddrive

The key will be either on the CD case? Or on the booklet that came with it.
