Hackers, PC Access and Speed Tests

I have been looking through the Computer Security forum, and i am shocked at the amount of Firewall and Hacker stuff posted.

As a side Bar, i cant believe how many people buy wireless kits and dont lock them down, no point in a firewall if your Wifi is wide open!!!
If you have a Wifi laptop or Pocket PC, Netstumber will show you all of the Wifi access points in range of your device and tell you if its locked down or not, which in itself is not illegal. however illegal addons are out there, so be sure your WiFi is set up correctly. Apparently According to the law, you are responsible for what is downloaded through your connections, not the person downloading...

I could spend all day recommending things, but a router has to be my #1 must have for any broadband connection.

This one is www.grc.com. Lots of utilities to test things like firewall security etc, but scroll down till you see hot spots and read and run through the web based utility called Sheilds Up. The service will see if any ports are open on your pc, and highlight the dangers. "for non techy people, a port is a potential way into your PC"

Another good tool is the free web based speed test, located at www.internetfrog.com.

There's loads written about securing router access but that has to be one of the easiest tests to run.
