Domain Names

How does this Domain Name thing work. If I wanted to register a Domain Name how do I avoid being ripped off? Can't help but wonder, if I tell one of the agents out there on the net my proposed name, what's to stop him registering the name himself and then renting it to me, at extra cost, and could I host a web site myself or does it get ever so complicated?

  1. Use http://www.just-the-name.co.uk/main.shtml to locate and purchase your URL
  2. You need a fixed IP from your broadband provider
  3. Use the JTN control panel (JTN will give you access) to point www.yoursite.co/com at the IP
  4. Dead easy

Re: Domain Names

It may be a good idea to get both of the main suffixes ??

So pay for both www.nameofsite.co.uk and www.nameofmysite.com

I know theres loads of different variants but they are the main two.

Re: Domain Names

Ta fellers. Who owns the Name once sorted. Say it's used for a business and the business takes off. This would increase the value of the Domain Name. Can the Register agent then say next years fee is a whole lot more? Or would you like to buy it for this huge amount or shall we sell it to your competitor?

Re: Domain Names

You sort of own it. As long as you don't let it expire - in which case it goes back on the market.

Ther sre a number of companies that monitor the expiration records ready to step in, but that tends to be for popular names

Cheers Roger. This site is so handy for impartial advice. Don't know what we'd do without it now. Thanks again.

Re: Domain Names

I'm just looking at the moment also, so thanks.

If a company is going to do that for me (buy names) and build site etc, is this ok. I will still own etc? Thanks.
