Dell reports over here that they are recalling up to 4,000,000 batteries made by Sony. Note that the batteries are also used in other computers and electronic equipment, so you'd best be certain you check. The CPSC are dragging their feet about other electronics powered by these batteries, so you may not see an official recall for non-Dell powered equipment.

When the battery malfunctions, it creates one hell of a blaze. I saw an interview with a guy who had his Dell go up in flames in his pickup. Destroyed the truck - and set off ammunition he had in his glove compartment! He's negotiating with Dell for compensation.
