Windows does this from time to time on mine. Do you have a modem / broadband connection still on when you switch off? Try switching it off first and then closing down windows. When was the last time you up-dated windows? If you have a pukka copy go to the microsoft website and download the updates. Failing that try de-fragging your installation of windows ( START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, DISK DEFRAGMENTER ). |

MiKKim, you should be able to run AVG on both machines without any issues. Got all my kids machines plus mine running it no problemo.

This happens when windows has downloaded updates that need to be installed when the machine is closing down. Normally you just leave it alone and it'll eventualy switch off, if it doesnt one of the updates is failing, so try installing them manualy to find out which one fails, then follow any error messages

I never allow XP to do updates for this very reason. If you press the F8 key at initial boot you will get the option to start in safe mode. Do this and then uninstall the update, all should be well then. As with many things........dont fix what aint broke

I assume it still starts ok ? It is a problem with one or more updates. Once windows has started, there should be a little yellow shield down by the clock. Double click this, then select custom install, and click next. you'll see a list of the updates ready to install. remove the tick from the boxes for all of them, at which point the install button will change to a close button. Close this down, then try and shut down windows. it should close ok. Then .... once restarted, click on start, control panel, then automatic updates, and chenge this from auto update, to download but let me choose when to install. stops all this auto updating rubbish. do remember to actual install them from time to time, cos some *may* be useful .... maybe ....
