Formatting request of my sd card???

I recently purchased a sd card with the whole of Nth America plus more on for use in my sat nav.

Works great and everything I need for travelling around the USA.

I have put it into my card reader as I do when using my other sd cards for uploading pictures and it asks me to format the card.

What I am trying to do is download all the info off the card making a copy in case I ever loose or damage it this would then save me having to buy another one. I am worried I may loose everything on the card if I click YES to format it.

Whaddya reckon?

Re: Formatting request of my sd card???

What are you putting it into to read it. I have a 4gb SD card that gives me this message when using my cardreader on a USB lead. It works just fine when using a small SD to USB adapter or in the laptop. Do you have a laptop with SD reader built in?

Don't let it format the card or you will lose all information if it's overwritten.

Yes I am putting it into a Jessops card reader on a USB lead which I use with other sd cards for uploading pixs.

Nothing showing in Features.pdf on the lappy!

On the laptop do you have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" as an option in Windows Explorer?

Yes I expect I can't download the USA maps etc fom the card because if could then if I were unscrupulous....

Sometimes worth trying an alternative card reader if you have one, perhaps on your printer

No don't seem to have,

No worries I don't think it will let me copy/save it as I said for the reasons in my last post.

Re: Formatting request of my sd card???

Is the little tab set to allow moving stuff from the card, the tab on the card that is?

As has been said, do not format, but if you do it can be recovered if you dont write over it.

You will be able to copy the info, is it for tom tom, Magellan or what?

It is a Sandisk adapter with a tab allowing lock or unlock it was on unlock.

The info is stored on a 2GB mini card inserted in the adapter.

It's for a Garmin.
