Firewall
A firewall is an an essential piece of software that prevents unauthorized access to your computer via the internet. It is you first line of defence against malware & viruses. Only install one firewall as more than one may cause conflicts and slow down your system drastically. Windows XP (SP2 onwards) and Vista include an integrated firewallbut I don’t recommend it. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions.

Anti-Virus
Anti-virus software is a computer programs designed to identify and eliminate viruses and other malicious software. Only install one anti-virus as more than one may cause conflicts and slow down your system drastically.
Real-Time Spyware Protection
These perform a similar function to anti-virus software but look specifically for spyware such as trojans and pop-ups. Only install one of these programs as more than one may cause conflicts and slow down your system drastically.

Spyware Prevention
Helps prevent malware and viruses install themselves

Spyware Scanners
Search and destroy malware. Only activated when you choose, do not sit in memory and do not work automatically.

How to use:
  • Install 1 Firewall - remember to disable the windows firewall if you are not using it
  • Install 1 Anti-Virus
  • Install 1 Spyware Protection

Optionally install SpywareBlaster and a Malware Scanner

For example:
  • Online Armour Firewall
  • Avira Anti-Virus
  • Spywhere Terminator
  • SpywareBlaster
