Terrible low speed, should be at least 4x this for download. Try plugging your router/modem into the BT test socket - that's the main socket where it comes into the house, the faceplate comes off and you've got a socket behind. Turn off any cordless phones.

Does that make any difference?

Dial 17070 and press option 2 - quiet line test. Listen to the line, ther should be no noise. If you hear any pops & crackles - kick BT

What make/model router have you got?

Login to the hub at http://bthomehub.home
username
admin
password either admin or
your serial number (sticker on the back/underneath)

Go to status page you should see your upload and download speeds there.

The other possibility I thought of: Do you download much? Movies & Music. BT will throttle your internet speed if you go over. Depending on your contract this can be 10Gb, 15Gb or 'Unlimited' each month

Couldn't get through on your link Roger, so went into BT Broadband Help Q&A typed in speed then tested, here's the result, all double dutch to me.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 704 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 1250 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 546 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP. If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance. Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

BT are saying you have a 1250Kb/s (1.25M) connection that is only connecting at 704Kb/s and only actually delivering 546Kb/s

What is your ADSL Speed supposed to be?

Try here to see what BT say you can get: BT Broadband

It's not great, it says I can get 6.5Mb when I can actually get 20.5Mb/s but it'll give us an idea

Re: Computer not responding

Tried that, it wouldn't let me copy it so here goes:-

Availability checker.

Your exchange is ASDL enabled and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have a ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 512 kbps, however due to the length of your line a engineer visit may be required, who will where possible supply the broadband service.
Our test also indicates your line currently supports a potential ADSl max broadband line rate of 500 kbps or greater.

Your exchange is planned to have ADSL WBC by 31/3/09.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL WBC broadband line rate of 500 kbps or greater.

Phew!!!

Re: Computer not responding

Nothing I can do then, oh well have to wait for them to upgrade, poor show I think,

Thankyou Roger for your time and help in the matter, at least now I won't have to go out and buy another PC, as did Old Mo, and to Brigger, I now know a bit more about pc's

Still all double Dutch to me, it might help a few other people on here with similar problems.
