broadband speed test

This is for your info really, not a question.

I lost all broadband speed last Friday, where i normally download files at 250kb/s, on a good server i could also get 300/400kb/s. i was getting 15kb/s.
I phoned Virgin and got their call centre in India, well the guy was very helpfull but it was uphill to say the least. He wanted me to connect the modem direct to the PC, and they did not support Kaspersky firewall. I have a small network at home with a router and black box switch. I could not connect direct as the modem is in another location in the house.

Anyhow i 'borrowed; a 10 metre Ethernet lead from work and connected direct to the PC, made my call to Virgin on Saturday morning, low and behold i got someone in Swindon...English.

He told me to reboot my PC into Safe Mode with Networking (push F8 or F5 at the first black screen). The reason for the safe mode with networking is any bad drivers, trojans will not be loaded in this mode. He then told me to got to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test, click on myresults at the top of the page, then on the far right under speed measurement drop it down and choose Megabits then click the save button.

Go back to the first page and choose one of the Irish link sites and click test. The reason for this is that this site sends and receives bigger packets so giving a more accurate result.

I should be getting 2megabits as i have a 2mb connection, what i actually got was 0.6megabits. The long and the short of it is that my modem is fubar...this all took about ten minutes as opposed to the hour on the first call.

I hope this can help someone else if they think their speed is low.

Re: broadband speed test

Which test site did you use - Maidenhead is the best?

These speed-testers are not very accurate.

If you login to your Router on the stats page it will usually, tell you what speed you are connected for up and down. Have you tried that?

It could also be a problem either on your line or the exchange. Insist that Virgin check out the line and the DSLAMs at the exchange.

Re: broadband speed test

I've tested mine today.

MAIDENHEAD
PING=26ms
DISTANCE=~150 mi
LATENCY=26ms

2.35PM D/L=1976 U/L=235

6.41PM D/L=891 U/L=246

6.47PM D/L=823 U/L=247

I'm on 2Mb contract,is this Tiscali choking it down in peak times?

I know they do if you're running peer to peer under fair usage clause,but I'm only using this site.

Re: broadband speed test

Hey hawkeye,
Good work. Did you buy the modem from virgin, if so how much, I think mine may be on it's way out.
Cheers
