Backup and Restore Center

Does anyone know if the Backup and Restore Center within Windows Vista compresses files or is it a straight copy (in Mb/Gb size terms anyway)?

Just curious as Im wanting to use a spare hard drive for this purpose.

It looks like it uses an "incremental" backup technique so I might need several "instances" to get back a full restore if I ever needed to.
