A friend of mine is a BT engineer and he says that all ADSL lines run on the back of BT lines. They are in the same exchange as well, but in seperate room that are 'not' air conditioned. Depending on the heat output this may have some effect on service.
I will ask him about the 'iplate' though. Funnily enough he is p***ed off with his BT connection, he has an 8mb connection but can only get 5mb at best.
The separate rooms aren't necessarily air conditioned as each service provider should provide self contained units that work within 'normal' temp variants, e.g. 10c - 40c. It is rare for temps to get above that within an exch, otherwise the auto fire detect system, (which detects smoke, flame and heat) would be set off.
It is true that all 'copper' asdl's run on BT lines because service providers want maximum profit for least cost, hence, cheap exchange equipment and no input to telecom infra-structure.

I would be rather interested to know why you need such a large bandwidth?
2Mb is all that is needed for IPTV, add another 2 Mb for music, surfing and gaming whilst IPTV is running plus extra's, max anyone needs in a house is 5Mb until IPHDTV comes on stream, then 8 - 10 should suffice. It's OK screaming for faster speeds if its a reality and you can use it all, but don't moan if you haven't got 10Mb when you probably wouldn't use it anyway, bit like broadband speed snobbery.

All we did was enquire about the 10mb connection which we were entitled to, only to be told we could have the 20mb at £1.50 a month LESS!!. I have to say the difference between 2mb and 20mb is staggering, obviously where you are downloading from makes a big difference.

40c seems a bit high unless you have something that is designed for the heat, the IT guys wet their pants if we reach 24c, 28c is about the limit for IT gear as it goes a little ape then.

The Difference Between kbps And kb/s

Definition:

kbps stands for Kilo Bits Per Second

kb/s stands for Kilo Bytes Per Second

The technical explaination is thus:

A Bit is the smallest piece of information a computer understands. A Byte is 8 Bits.

There is often alot of confusion with regards to the measurements kbps and kb/s. They are both used to measure, test and quote speeds on the Internet. ISP tend to quote speeds in kbps, so you see broadband packages quoted as 512, 1 Meg (actually 1024kbps), 2 Meg (actually 2048kbps) etc. etc. and browers tend to quote download speeds in kb/s, so 64kb/s, 128kb/s, 256kb/s etc.

You will see that kb/s is 8 times smaller than kbps!

Re: Broadband Speed??

Baza, your teminology of Bit is the new one. In my day a bit was a girl (now don't go getting upset ladies i mean in the best possible taste), mind you i never went out with a Byte.

Can you imagine it, taking eight girls, suicidal.

Re: Broadband Speed??

According to BBC News, a test conducted in South Africa resulted in a carrier pigeon getting 4 gig of data to a user 60 miles away in the time it took for his broadband to download 4% of the data.
Sadly we're knee deep in sparrowhawks around here so a few bytes might go missing, otherwise Sky.com could go whistle...
Cheers,
Pete
