Re: iPhone SatNav

Sounds like there's little point in me getting a 3Gs if I can get a 2gen handset and by flashing the ROM get the equivalent of the 3Gs. Unless the 3.2 mega pixel camera is a hardware upgrade that is. Otherwise it looks like a srtaightforward hack and you've got everything the 3Gs has...and more.

Thanks for the post Sal.

Re: iPhone SatNav

The 3GS has a faster CPU and more RAM . It also has a built in compass.Very handy Im sure .
Web pages supposedly load faster. From what I have seen the difference is noticable but still only a matter of seconds.I do sometimes wish it would load web pages a bit quicker, but its not SLOW, even on graphics heavy pages.
WRT the camera , as far as I know it is hardware.Neither the 2.0MP or the 3.2 is going to be as good as even a dedicated camera of the same size.I use the camera for snapshots and its fine. The video recorder on the 3GS looks good, you can easily upload to Youtube, and I imagine you can get them off the phone easy enough. With the earlier model you have to SSH into the phone to get the video off, which is fine if you are into all of that, but if you just want an easy life the 3GS is the way to go (if video is that important to you).
Personally if I could get a 3G cheaply 2nd hand then I would .If buying new I would go for the 3GS.

Regarding the "sat nav" already on the phone I assume you mean Google Maps?? It isnt turn by turn navigation. I used it once, I kept losing signal,it took forever to update,so I missed loads of turns. It took me 3 times as long to get to my destination as it should have done. AND it uses data, so OK in this country, not so good abroad.

Re: iPhone SatNav

What do people use to mount their iPhones to the handlebars, where did you get it and can the phone be charged in the mount? Cheers.

Re: iPhone SatNav

I've often wondered what the legal situation would be when using the Sat nav option?
Could you be done for using a mobile phone whilst driving?

Re: iPhone SatNav

I have an iphone with tomtom on it. You can get a sealed little baggie that has a small 3.5 jack seal going through it. Plug this in to your iphone then and ear phone on the other end.
Test the volume other wise it feels like someone shove a spike through your head.
This hangs around your neck on a cord. Seems to pick up a signal ok through my jacket. Tomtom picks up a signal really quick.

I have a 3G iphone, as Sal says they are much quicker that the 2G. Camara is crap....end of.

Looks like eglidegoodies.com is the only place for iPhone mounts

Re: iPhone SatNav

This morning, I installed Co-pilot Live on the iPhone...and I have to say I'm hugely impressed.

£25.99 for something which even has a 'motorbike' setting.

Twenty five quid and it worked perfectly all day, allowing music to be played while the app was running.

This was facilitated through buying an iPhone bicycle mount from eBay, which worked a treat at a snip of the cost of something chrome.

YEP

The mount is proving itself to be ace and the software really is brilliant value.

I strongly commend this option to the house.
