Thumbs up SD card formatting WTF is this all about? Update: Resolved

Ok here is the story I have a oldish camera that will not accept the new SDHD cards up to 8GB plus.

So I have just bought 2 x 2 GB SD cards from a company via Amazon (waiting for reply from seller)

Here is the problem:

Both cards take photos no probs and show in the camera screen perfectly.
But when I put them into the PC to view on screen/edit/save whatever the PC says the card needs to be formatted so I formatted both of them in the camera menu facility.

Name: 1.jpg
Views: 188
Size: 12.0 KB

Back to taking more test pixs on both and again the PC asks for the cards to be formatted offering me to do it there and then in Windows....

Name: 2.jpg
Views: 190
Size: 23.3 KB

.....So I let it do it and hey presto it tells me Windows was unable to format the frigging card!

Name: 3.jpg
Views: 200
Size: 12.0 KB

Please can anyone throw any light on this as I am now stuck.

BTW the 1GB card I have used for a couple of years works fine.

And both the new ones are NOT locked

Re: SD card formatting WTF is this all about?

Some software will not read cards over 1Gb.

Try ignoring/deleting the formatting offer and open the card in Explorer like an external drive. Open the folders in the normal way and highlight/copy the photos into My Documents or such on your C drive.

If that doesn't work you may need to scan the web for info on what drivers you can get for the cards.

Not sure if in the right direction here? But I just transfer my pictures from camera onto THIS then save to: My Pictures. Don't use Windows at all.

Don't worry about the Nikon bit, it downloads from other cameras.

Just spoken to the frigging store and they reckon they are faulty. GREAT!

Thanks for your help anyway

I'll do a follow up when new ones arrive.

BaZa,

I've been through several digital cameras and no longer use the dedicated s/w they come with. I haven't encountered that particular problem, but I also suggest you try Explorer and simply drag and drop the files for each picture onto your pc drive. Once there you should be able to process them like any other pics.

Re: SD card formatting WTF is this all about?

BaZa,

You just posted while I was writing my last one! I see it describes the file system as RAW. This is an alternative type of file to JPEG and others, also not commonly used except in flashy cameras (like one of mine!). So a distant possibility (if I am not too late) is that a setting in your camera needs adjustment? On the other hand you may be a digital whizzkid who only ever uses RAW.....

FAT RAW who knows....

All I know is my camera is not a flash new one that is why it won't take the new SDHD cards.

The camera works with the new card and I can see the pixs. It just won't open on my PC or explorer or anything. Now sending the bloody things back.

There is so much crap being sold on the internet from the far east so it's on it's way back to Mr Saras in Birmingham!

Nothing to do with raw as in the file fomat. Download this. Double click to install. Once installed run it.

Cheers Roger but I had already taken them back to the post office.

Spoke to them this morning and he said if my PC card reader is old it may not recognise the 2GB cards!!!

Anyway he is sending another two out today so I will format them using your link.
