Anti Virus

Can anyone recommend me a free antivirus programme? I currently run Avira free, but have found that apart from the continual pop ups advertising their upgrades which are annoying, it now doesn't seem to be updating itself As I am typing this I am waiting for it to complete a manual upgrade which has taken 22 minutes so far!

Avira have had a problem the last few days. Don't let it put you off, it is by far the best free AV available (and those popups can be disabled )

Can't possibly do that, 'cos that's the price you pay for using it free.

But...

If you clicked the start button on you deaktop toolbar and then clicked 'Run'
Typed gpedit.msc and clicked OK
Then found User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System
Double clicked "Don't run specified Windows applications"
Enabled it and clicked show
Added "avnotify.exe"
Click OK on all open windowsand then restarted

I couldn't possibly predict what might happen

Re: Anti Virus

Doesn't work for me, Windows says it can't find gpedit.msc

I have Avira anti-virus installed, and although it seems to work well, including automatically updating, I do find the pop-ups annoying.

I'll live with it if there is no alternative.....

Roger, thanks have done that so it will be interesting to see if it works! Begs the question, how do you know that stuff? .

Daggers, thanks for your input, I have tried AVAST before and if Roger's suggestion doesn't work I might well go back to them.

OK, for XP Home edition
  • Boot into safe mode (power on and repeatedly click the F8 key)
  • Ensure that you're logged in as an Administrator
  • Go to C:\Program File\AntiVir PersonalEdition (or whatever it's called) and find avnotify.exe
  • Right-click it and click Properties > Security > Advanced
  • In the Permissions folder select each user in turn and
  • Edit > Traverse Folder / Execute File > Deny > OK
  • Repeat for each user
  • Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished
