Re: Dead Laptop

My MESH lappy died last night - looking for something very cheap to run Linux on and something more Apple-like on a monthly payment plan (because I can't afford their prices outright but want one).

Re: Dead Laptop

Bit late now but my daughter's Acer died in an identical manner at, again, just over 2 years old; turned out the CPU has a known fault which causes them to take out the motherf*****g motherboard - repair would have been over £200, with the parts having to come on a slow boat from China
Cheers,
Pete

Re: Dead Laptop

I know it's a bit late now but one of the big problems with laptops is the difficulty in maintenance. They do overheat due (usually) to a build up of dust. The space inside a laptop is very restricted and as they tend to get used as a desktop pc quite regularly (plugged into the mains and hence battery always on charge) a lot of heat is produced. This affects the battery by shortening it's life. The battery producing heat plus the heat generated by the electronic 'gubbins'* means extra heat to get rid of. If the cooling fins on the cpu are partially blocked by dust and the electronic components are partially covered in dust then the cooling effect is reduced to a condition where the components are working outside their temperature tolerances - this will cause premature failure.
Heat is a killer of all electrical 'gubbins'*.

* Gubbins -- miscellaneous unspecified things. (for those of you who are technically minded )

Re: Dead Laptop

S'right - it was heat which did it for mine.

Still, I now own a spanking MacPro as a replacement
