Transferring files

Going to buy a new computer soon. What is the best/easiest way of transferring files from the old one to the new one?

Re: Transferring files

I had to do this recently, used 'windows file transfer' that is built into Windows 7, it worked to get stuff off my old XP laptop and onto the new W7 one.

Re: Transferring files

One of those cheap USB external hard drives is a good way to go as well, and you can us it for your backup (you do have a backup?) as well.

I bought a 640Gb Toshiba (but I only paid £55 delivered) and I use a Freecom 500Gb ToughDrive at work (which comes with password protection, and built-in USB connector, rather than a cable (I prefer the cable actually).

Don't know what's happened to prices; they all seem to have rocketed since I bought them.

Re: Transferring files

As said windows file transfer onto an external drive.

Also you could backup to DVD. You could then copy back anything you want on the new machine from there.

Yep - I've done it both ways..........Had all my stuff backed up onto a DVD once and the second time, I'd backed it all up onto an external hard drive. It also stores and imports all your favourites too.

Re: Transferring files

Thanks gents for your input. I didn't mention that I want to transfer from a desktop to a new desktop, but I guess it's the same. Will probably use a DVD and then download from that onto the new machine.

Re: Transferring files

uggy, you can still use windows easy transfer even with a dvd burn, just launch it from the start button and it will guide you through. works really well (done it last night again as i bought a new laptop) and even transfers all user accounts and details.
