wheel sizes - advice needed!

I'm thinking of going a bit larger on the rear wheel of my Dyna. If you use a spoked wheel and offset it you can get a 180 or 200 tyre in the standard swinging arm. I would only go as big as 200 anyway and this is how W&F in germany do it.
Now, the question is, to go for a 16" with 'normal' tyre or 17" rim with low-profile tyre. What are the relative rolling sizes? Being only 5' tall I daren't raise the bike any more than I have to!
Also, any ideas on cheap wheelbuilders? I'm going to use stainless rim and spokes laced to a Harley hub.
On the first picture the mudguard looks a bit messy and on the second it's too high but you get the idea I hope! Also, as I've got a 130 x 16" in the front it'll look more 'balanced'.

smalhog,
stick with a 16" rim, also dont bother getting one built just buy a complete rim, take a look at www.jirehcycles.com they do a 60 spoke rear wheel that will take a 180 or 200 for about $160 by the time you add a bit of shipping and VAT youre looking at about £250, it will cost you the best part of £100 to get the wheel built plus the cost of the rim. if you buy a new rim you can sell the one you have as well.

I rebuilt my rear wheel with a new rim last year, I used the original hub (the hubs the same whatever size wheel you use, as long as the spoke counts the same). , and sourced a set of s/s spokes & s/s rim off e-bay. I laced the rim myself , I'd never done one before but after a bit of research on the Internet, it only took a morning from start to finish.
One thing about 17" wheels is that there's a huge range of tyres to fit as most modern sports bikes run on a 17" rear.

Hi Lynne

Diameter of rear tire. 16" rear typically 25.30". 18" rear typically 26.60". 17x200 26.1"; 17x180 24.84; 17x170 25.12; 17x160 25.44"; 17x150 25.66".

Thanks to http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/advchoppercalc.html for the information.

My advice would be to go to a 17" rim - much more choice of tyres.

Whilst you can fit 200 wide tyres inthe back of a Dyna you will need to change the fender and rails. You can just about wedge a 160 in a stock frame without changing anything. I've put a rear wheel from a Duece in mine (17"/55 x 160).

If you want a price for a 17" laced wheel you could always try one of the hard working Independants that support the club for a price- you might be surprised.

Hi There,

There is another good rake & trail calculator available on perseperformance.com

Anyone thinking of fitting raked yokes on a stock bike should run the calculations through here first. The results can be quite scary!
