Bike restoration Queries

Help needed!

My Cousin has got a 1991 Springer,

currently it is a shed on wheels, having access to a variety of tools and a nice warm garage we are looking to strip it completely.

items on the too do list:
1) rewiring total
2) fat ass rear
3) engine rebuild
4) frame powder coated
5) belt drive change etc

what would be the very best manual for stripping and rebuilding as it is a two year project and want to do a proper job of it

any advice would be gratefully received

with thanks

Andy

Re: Bike restoration Queries

For all the stock H-D bits (strip-down and rebuild of stock parts), you can't live without the genuine factory manual IMHO and the parts book is pretty much essential too. I use a Clymer to back it up, as it sometimes mentions 'other ways' of doing things, that don't require special tools and so on.
There's a thread about manual sourcing here:
http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.c...n-cam-88b.html
Money well spent.
There's never been a better time to buy things from the States, and books should (I think) be VAT-free? It will pay to place an order with a US supplier for all the bits that will need replaced, like fork bushings, 1450 kit, gaskets, etc., and laugh all the way to the bank as you pay half the UK prices...
For all the alterations, each is going to be specific to what you change, and the parts suppliers should advise on the installation of their parts. Some will be better than others.
Somebody on here knows, and it's not me...

Good luck - sounds like fun..

Re: Bike restoration Queries

agreed. factory manual AND parts book. everything else is a distant second place.

Bear in mind, of course, that fitting a wide rear end and associated issues will conflict with the manual's words.

Just in case you didnt know, as a lot of people hate rewiring, complete wiring looms are now available for most recent-ish H-Ds.....
