Help with Engine Removal

Trying to take the engine and gearbox out of my 91 springer softail and have only managed to get the left hand thread loosened on the clutch which now moves in and out but only an inch or so as the chain is still attached to the compensating sprocket shaft nut.

The compensating sprocket shaft nut appears to not wish to come undone at all.

it is really frustrating, how do you now loosen this nut, we can put in gear but there is no drive belt so the nut turns the assembly freely but does not come undone.

any helpful comments gratefully received

Re: Help with Engine Removal

You have to lock the two sprockets together with a special tool or a lump of hardwood jammed between the two. Its veeerrrrry tight. Mick.

Re: Help with Engine Removal

THanks Mick, will try a lump of wood tomorrow.

It is the last hurdle before having the bike completely stripped down, ready for the rebuild.

Re: Help with Engine Removal

you need an 8.5inch jam bar to fit between the sprockets. Wood will work, long as it is a real solid block. I have a piece of scrap metal with rounded-off ends in the toolbox for just this purpose. Place AT AN ANGLE...high on one sprocket, low on the other.

get the front wheel up against a wall if you are doing it solo

place the jam bar .... use a breaker bar on the comp sprocket socket .... failing that a length of pipe on the end of socket wrench..... and you will do it no sweat

I have used a rattle gun, no problems

others claim that this lossens the magnets on the alternator, but have not yet had this happen

rattle gun is quick and easy

Re: Help with Engine Removal

well the lump of hard wood worked a real treat, engine, starter motor and primary drive are now all off the bike. all that is left in the frame are the rear shocks and the gear box.

many thanks for all the suggestions
