dechroming

i've got some chrome rear shocks with covers etc, which i want to dechrome. the rest of the shiny bits have been powder coated.

i can dismantle the shocks, powder coat the covers, but i don't think i can get the damper bodies done due to the heat in the process and potentially damaging internal seals etc?

i've used 'special metal' primers in the past on 'keyed' chrome, but not been too impressed.

anyone out there can suggest any descent products that i can satin black my shocks withour the paint/stuff flaking off in the wind?

cheers, laters.
j.

Re: dechroming

Light shot blasting or bead blasting will remove the chrome back to bare metal.
I've warmed metal up before to the point where you can't touch it....using a heater. Then primed and sprayed it. When it cools down it's on there for life.

Re: dechroming

mmm, not sure about that. in my experience only way to blast chrome off would be with such abrasion and force underlying metal would get damaged. don't think bead blasting would touch it? all chrome i've had removed in the past has been electrically stripped.

interesting that heating up approach to applying paint, makes sense, oven, bake etc. but i still think i couldn't do that as the heat might damage the seals in the damper body?

i'll roughen them up abit and experiment with various coatings etc.

cheers,
