Chain drive conversion

Has anyone out there converted their Harley from belt to chain final drive?

If so, what do you think?

Re: Chain drive conversion

swapped mine years ago as belt change on late shovel is a nightmare, no problems at all keep it lubed & adjusted is all. ( lets face it same chain system since 1948 why fix wots not broke ) Oh yeah chain about 1/3d cost of belt.

Re: Chain drive conversion

I've done it on my 2 sportsters and am happy of the mods.
I only needed the specific spacer for front sprocket.(for all models from 1996 to 2003).
With an excellent heavy duty 530 XW ring chain, no problem of tension.

Re: Chain drive conversion

I thought about it but it works out a lot more expensive than a belt
only if you are going big cc and power i cant see any advantage,
the only down side of a belt is changing it, but if you do it your self not a job,
a belt will last up to and beyond 100,000 mls in some cases
i have worn mine out in 47,000 mls it,s still on at the moment waiting for a new one, i live in rural Devon on very poor lanes and ride all the year the dust and muck have worn the pully and the belt but ithink i would have wore out more than one set of chains and sprockets

interesting?? most people claim the opposite, especially if you have to change the pulleys on a belt

Re: Chain drive conversion

I didn't think you had to change the pulleys every time you change the belt, like you do with chain & sprockets.

Haven't had to change a belt yet (my bike's only got about 21000 miles on it) but I much prefer the belt to a chain for the smoothness and quietness.
