Black rims & spokes for the FXSTBi

not sure if this should really go in this thread as I'm not making anything myself, just some bolt on stuff but the thing is I've searched the Hangout and can't find reference to my problem anywhere. I have an '05 FXSTBi and I'm doing some stuff over the winter to make it a bit smarter. Thing is that my wheels got mucked up when I got caught in some salt (that I didn't realise was there). This all messed the chrome on the front laced wheel and as I'm doing the black thing I would like to know:
1 - Is it OK to get the rim stripped and then powder coated? I mean will it mess it up structurally or anything? - I did hear something a while back about the heat or something being not too good for them.
2 - Does anyone know where I could get hold of someone to powder coat the thing for me around the Stratford on Avon way, or where I could buy a black rim and spokes for it?

Powdercoating is not a problem. But of course, it's a lot more hassle and cost on a laced wheel. You will no doubt be employing a lacer at each end of the project.

My wheels are powdercoated purple but they are 9-spoke and 16-spoke Shovel era wheels, not laced. All i had do to was remove all bearings and races.

Here's a tip...go to one of those boy-racer shops and ask the dudes there where you can find a powdercoater. A lot of the kids get their car wheels done. Often a cheap deal.

Thanks for the tip but I don't really trust those guys who do the boy racer stuff. Had my old sporty frame done by one of them in the 80's and had to take it back coz the finish was appalling.

Tee,

I had my wheels powder coated red a few months back, I stripped the wheels myself. had them powdercoated then had them professionaly re-built, total cost was about £250 i think, were abouts are you? i can recomend a number of powder coaters in kent that i have used. also have a look at a company called Aerocoat they do a postal service and they are very very good.

I can't personally recommend these .... http://www.ctc-powder-coating.co.uk/ ... but might be worth a look at what they can do and what it costs.

Phil.

This is a powder coaters that may be worth a call, a lot of top custom bike & scooter boys use them, I've seen their work on a couple of local custom scooters & it is mint, they also do custom effects colour fades etc.
You can post the parts to them.

Is it neccessary to unlace the wheel before blasting then powder coat ??
Could the bearings not be popped out then the wheel done whilst still laced ??

You need to remove the spokes, bearings et all. The holes have to be plugged the same as when chromers plug the hole prior to plating,- like plating if the parts are left together the powder/plate will "fuse" the joint.

I'd say that's were a coater/plater that is used to auto/bike parts have the advantage as they know exactly which parts to to mask.

Blast 'N' Prep next to Magpie (Meriden Triumph) motorcycles in Coventry.

They do classic and vintage bikes and cars.

Contact Phil Bednell 02476 695403.

Worth a try, at least they can advise what can and can't be done. Scoll had a swinging arm done there recently, looked pretty good to me.

Or maybe Pegasus Engineering Home
