Stripdown Finished

Sorry it's been a while since I last posted anything on this. Christmas got in the way and then my PC broke and I couldn't upload any pics. I have been working on it honest

Anyway a few pics of the Shovels current state.

The pile of bits in the corner is getting bigger

Since these were taken, the frame and various brackets have gone to the powder coaters and the heads and barrels have gone off to be shot blasted. I've cleaned up the transmission and given it a coat of paint. It needs a couple more coats and some more polishing.

Now it's just a matter of sorting through stuff and cleaning it. I've ordered up a few new bits that have started to turn up so hopefully once I get the frame back I can start the rebuild.

The only real issues I've had are a broken top engine mounting bracket (see below)

and one of the tappet block screws has sheared off in the crank case. Not sure how I'm going to get it out yet!

I'll update with more progress pics as I go along.

Special thanks to Postie for helping me turn a functioning motorcycle into a pile of old parts. I owe you a beer or two.

Cheers,
Rob.

Re: Stripdown Finished

I don't know if you have a welder Rob but it wouldn't take much to duplicate that mounting bracket and cut the old one off.

Looks like you got some fun times ahead.
Look forward to progress.

Re: Stripdown Finished

yep the mounting bracket aint a problem, , cut off about 15 mm above the locating hole, make a template, find old piece of metal ,drill and file new mounting hole, get a good welder o weld it back on, and grind down weld, remeber and do all this before you repaint or powder coat the frame one of our lads michael, just had his softail frame powder caoted for 60 quid what a job, and it will last longer than paint, nice project you have there ,m8, keep the project and piccies coming

Looking very good,

will be great to see it going together, after you have cleaned and painted everything.

Like the paint work, are you keeping it flamed and traditional or going away from that to something plainer.

do you have any other plans or are you keeping it "stockish"

I'll be going with flames, something like this

Mostly stockish. I have some extra shiny forks to fit and I need to find a set of large apes to put on but apart from that it will be fairly standard.

On the mounting bracket front, Dave Bully has kindly welded it up for me and the frame is going to the powder coaters today so I should get it back in a week or so.

Cheers,
Rob.

Re: Stripdown Finished

Just purchased a set of 15" apes with wiring for our FXWG, planning on fitting this weekend, will send you a picture so you can see if you think they are too tall, just right or far too conservative.

Would certainly like the flame job just like the picture butthat is a project for next year sadly.

Keep us updated
