Smile wide tyre conversion

Hi there

Just need a bit of guidance on wide tyre conversion, wheel sizes etc for my 94 heritage

First option I wanted to put a wide tyre conversion to accommodate a 200 rear tyre, but there are so many kits out there just wanted to know if anyone had any knowledge of good kits

Second option was to keep the standard swing arm and replace the belt drive with a chain final drive and then put a bigger tyre on 180 or 200, is this a better option?

Third option, was just to purchase a thinner belt and new rear pulley to accomodate a 150 tyre

Any info would be gratefully received,

Jackbrock

There's so many variations, and so may combinations of parts, that another thread on the subject wont even make a mark.
Just do a search on these boards and you'll find may previous threads to confuse yourself with, like here.- http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.c...s-softail.html

Re: wide tyre conversion

As Kev say's the choice is endless for wide tyre kits, i have a 180 kit on mine that the previous owner did, same swingarm, thinner belt different rear guard and struts, seat etc. if i remeber correctly it cost him around 3.5k to do it, IMO not worth it although i do like the look of the 18" wheel

remember that if you go for a bigger tyre you will also have to replace the rear guard, struts seat etc etc etc alot of expense for a few extra mm

my kit came from heartland USA HeartlandBiker.com

Re: wide tyre conversion

Cheers for that

BDL do a kit for up to 180 tyre using the stock swing arm, the belt they provide is only 1inch wide though, some people have said its too narrow , others have said it will be ok if the motor is not beefed up at all

Cheers

I'm running a 11/8" belt, on a 15"230 tyre on a standard H-D hub and a 8" wide wheel rim. I had to use a 1" off set on the pulley, had to offset the trans to match along with the primary.
My frame was cut and widened for the wider swing arm,- by the previous owner but self destructed and had to be put straight.
Took a couple of trips to the machine shop to get the wheel spacers to line the wheel up again, after two years I think its about right now but it is just a fashion thing. It don't handle well and doesnt like tight corners, and every bit had to be made to fit.- But it's mine & I love it.
£4k for a kit fat wheel, - that would buy me a whole bike.

Nice looking bike, do you think a 1 " belt would be too thin in the kit BDL are selling .The kit says it will take up to a 180 tyre using the stock swing arm( I know ill have to change wheel fender etc) just a bit concerned about the width of the belt

Re: wide tyre conversion

As long as the belt runs true, it won't be a problem - they're made of Kevlar and normally only need replacing around the 100,000 mile mark - chains are a pain.

2006 nighttrain and all 2007 up softails use a 20mm wide belt, width isn't important, as said above alignment is everything.

When this belt go's I will go over to a chain drive, with a bodged up swing arm it'll run a 128 or a 130 tooth belt but sourcing a 11/8" belt of that length is a nightmare, at least with a chain I can get a new one at the local Jap bike shop and break to fit,- the new "x" ring (?)chains don't need the maintenance of the old chains, for me it's just the easy way out.
