Hi Mark, dont know whether you have tried the dealership nearest to you. I am a new Harley rider myself and purchased a softail standard from them, I found the staff there very helpful and test rode a couple bikes from there untill I found just what i was looking for with no sales pressure what so ever. I live at Melton so often pop up there for a coffee and see what is on offer.

misquote simon, I was meaning that even a 20 year old sporty will still command £3k which is probably more than it was worth new

If you are going to buy a sporty throw loads of extras on it and sell it with 18 months then yes, you are right and you will lose money

alternatively take all the extras off flick them on ebay and trade the bike in, dealers will give you very little extra for all the extra bling fitted

Re: hi im new here and live in loughborough

Graham with apology didnt wish to misquote you just use it as an example of how a fool and his money can be easily parted (which of course is precisely what the dealer wish's to pursue)
my point is that a large number of people buy a sporty, develope what they beleive is a bike that will improve for them,
only after a period of time and money spent,
convert to a big twin and look back wondering what happened to all that money and effort.
thats not to say the sportster doesnt have its virtues, personaly i think they're a great little bike, thats why I've still got one of two still lurking in the corner of the garage.
Its horses for course's and some will forever be in love with their sportster's and I would never crititise them.

Top speed is not what it is about. It's the grin factor. Best thing you can do is contact your nearest dealer for a test ride. I took out three bikes from Robin Hood last year they just said bring them back in about 1 1/2 hours. I live quite close to them so could nip home for the pillion passenger to get on and then tried the bike out. I'm not sure where they stand on you and a pillion going out but I can't see why they should object. So ring them, take one out for run, and if you're not grinning from ear to ear when you get back try another one. If none of them give you the grin factor you have no soul.

agree with alan its largely irrelevant but they should pull over 100mph, had a old iron head sporty which according to the factory make less power than an evo and it would pull 110 - 115

If you ever get bored with an 883 power then it is a very simple job to take them out to 1200cc, about £500 ride in and ride out with the bigger motor
