knock knock

Got back from holland and me engine was a bit noisy, sort of knocking.

Took it to me mate what does the spanners and he said it was just gettin old.... one of the base gaskets was leaking so he said he would do that.

I the process of strippin down found scoured pistons, which explained the blown base gasket, so had a re-bore and 8:1's fitted. Mmmm lovley... more power.

Trouble is still knocking. so checked drive chain to see if it was too loose, but that is ok. Main and little bearing are fine (inspected when re-boared). so must be comming from cam or lifters etc.

Going to pull it apart and have a look.

Any coments welcome (apart from telling me not to ride me bike hard X )

Re: knock knock

Compensator? if its loose/worn it can create that symptom.

Re: knock knock

Oh thats sounds interesting,

not sure what it is but it sound like a thing that adjusts the travel of the cam and pushrod gap. Easyto get to is it?

Re: knock knock

Nothing to do with the cam Michael, it's located in the primary. It's the big bolt on the small sprocket of the primary chain. To check it out you would have to remove the primary cover.
If it is the compensator it can make a banging noise, if the lifters were on the way out the noise would be less meaty and more rattly, if you know what i mean.

do you have a manual for your bike at all? it will show you in that how to get to it.

Re: knock knock

my first thought was definitely loose compensator sprocket assembly even before I scrolled to Robbiemac's post. Let us know what you find.

Re: knock knock

I will strip down the primary this weekend. The sound is a knocking If I accelerate I can hear it but if I shut down it goes quiet...

If the problem is as simple as it sounds I will be very Happy.

cheers kiwidave
